DUMPLINGS + PEACE TREATS

I may have missed National Dumpling Day (September 26th), but it is never too late to celebrate, right? Dumpling Melody Bistro is across from my bike shop and the sign that read "$4.99 Lunch Special with Free Drink" seemed like a really good deal.

We stood outside for a minute, looking at the lunch menu. There was only one option that was $4.99, and showed 5 regular sized, pan fried dumplings. For a couple dollars more, there was more to choose from. Fried rice, lemon chicken and steamed dumplings were some of the options. Neither Max nor I were overly hungry so we decided to try it out and go for the cheapest option.

The place was empty except for two other diners. The decor was... odd. That is the best way I can describe the mini motorcycle in the corner, and the Santa decorations on the shelf.

Well, as you can imagine, I did not have high expectations at this point. I was pleasantly surprised when our food came out and the dumplings were three times as big as the ones on the photo! They did not just look good, they tasted amazing, too. Definitely well worth $5. Our server (the only server) was incredibly friendly as well.

If you are looking for a cheap lunch in the west end of the city, I recommend Dumpling Melody Bistro. I cannot speak of the rest of the menu, but the pan fried dumplings were top notch.

On our way home, we stopped off at Peace Treats. I have seen several Instagram posts of their over-the-top milkshakes and wanted to give it a try. Looking up the address, I was a little bit discouraged by the bad reviews. One person claimed there was no one to serve them, and after several minutes they got fed up and left. Another reviewer said the milkshakes "just weren't that good". Ouch.

I decided I still wanted to go and decide for myself if it was worth it or not. Peace Treats is actually located inside Peace Collective, a retail clothing store. This makes it a little bit tricky to find if you were not aware of this beforehand. The milkshake counter in right inside the door so once you go inside, you cannot miss it. The whole store is very minimalistic and simple, which I liked.

As for the milkshakes, all the classic flavours (boring) are $6 and the specialty flavours are $8.50. I ordered the "D.R.E.A.M (Donut's rule everything around me)".

Donut lover's dream. A vanilla milkshake topped with mini donut heaven.

With mini donuts, chocolate ice cream and whipped cream piled up high, this vanilla milkshake was pretty damn good. It is definately more for show, but the taste was there, too. I do think it is overpriced, but I say that as someone who was still willing to buy it so the price must be working for them.

Overall, a great day for food and a 70km bike ride. I hope to make the most of the mild October we are having, before it cools off.
