NIGHT IT UP!

This was an event I could hardly wait for! Night It Up! is a three-day, outdoor, Asian style night market featuring over a hundred food and merchandise vendors. The 2016 event was held at the Markham Civic Centre from July 15-17. Unfortunately, I was only able to make it for the last day, and did not get the total "night market" experience.

We arrived a couple hours after it opened and it was PACKED. It seemed like we were not the only ones who were looking forward to this weekend. We did a lap around, and were overwhelmed with options. I decided to start off by getting a pineapple smoothie from Tropic Love.

The drink came in a hollow pineapple, with a tiny umbrella on top. The smoothie itself tasted like one you would get from Tim Horton's or McDonald's, which was a little disappointing since it sported a $10 price tag, but I guess you are paying for the aesthetics over the taste.

Now on to the food! I went ahead and got a ramen poutine (they really call anything poutine these days) from Raging Ramen. The "fries" are made out of ramen noodles and they have several options for toppings (I got the K-Pork Star flavour). Maybe I am just being a really hard critic today, but I did not find this ramen poutine to be anything special. I think I would pass on it next time.

Max went to Wabi Sabi Musubis and got an "Umami Bomb". He let me have a bite, even though it was small, and it was like a flavour explosion in my mouth! I much prefered his choice to my own. If you are not familiar with umami, as I was not, it is a flavour profile, besides sweet, sour or bitter, that we do not have a word for in English.

We finished up our time at the market with some lemonade and headed home. Overall, we had a pleasant day, but not as memorable as I would have liked.
