NIAGARA TRIP DAY 1: BOON BURGER

Today we cycled from the east-end of Toronto, to Niagara Falls! Max and I had been tossing around the idea of this trip for awhile, and we both had a couple days off, so we figured now was as good a time as any. We popped our destination into Google Maps and estimated our trip would be about 125km, 50km further than our previous longest ride, but we were ready for the challenge! We planned on following the Waterfront Trail the whole way as it would be a scenic ride along the lake.
With very little preparation or planning, we set off. 80km later we were in Burlington and decided to look for a place to eat. The first place we saw was Boon Burger and we were sold. It was not until we sat down and took a closer look at the menu that we realized we might not be getting the big juicy burger we expected. Turns out Boon Burger is a vegan restaurant. Now neither of us are vegan, but the menu was intriguing, so we decided to stick around, and I am glad we did!
The fact that this restaurant was vegan turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I think vegans might be onto something as I had never felt better when I hoped back on my bike. The meal was very light, but filling, and packed with veggies. I do not know if I would choose a vegan burger over a beef burger should they both be in front of me in the future, but this was definitely a great choice with a long ride still ahead.
I do not know if anyone else has ever rode along the Waterfront Trail, but there are some sections where you have to detour through neighbourhoods and the signage is not entirely clear. This resulted in us having to stop several times to check directions, and a long unexpected detour through the industrial area of Hamilton.
Our total distance for the day ended up being 165km, with the last portion being our biggest incline of the ride, but we made it! We walked to a nearby pub and grabbed and beer and a schnitzel for dinner, which was nothing noteworthy, and then hit the hay. We plan on cycling around the Falls and surrounding area tomorrow, and then riding back home the following day.
